How can I prevent falls in my bathroom?
Bathrooms are a very common place for falls. A typical bathroom contains multiple trip and slip hazards. Besides slipping on wet floors, many people fall when stepping in and out of the tub or shower. There is often nothing to hold onto when entering or exiting the tub or shower.
- Grab bars are a very helpful and useful tool to improve safety in the bathroom. Bars are often installed on the wall getting into the tub and on the back wall of the shower to improve safety. Here is an example of grab bar placement around a toilet to improve safety with toilet transfers.
2. Hand held shower head. As you can see above a hand held shower is a great addition to your bathroom to improve your safety and for convenience. A hand held shower allows people to wash while seated on a shower chair and reach difficult areas.
3. Non slip mat or grips for shower or tub are imperative to preventing slipping while getting in or out of the shower and while standing in the shower. Here are great examples of a non slip bath mat and anti slip bath stickers. Both are great choices to prevent falls.

4. A shower chair or bench is a great addition to the shower. Sitting during the shower reduces the risk of falls significantly. This chair below is a great choice due to the handles on each side, which will make transfers easier. Make sure you measure and check dimensions before purchasing to ensure they will fit in your bathroom and shower area.

5. Raised toilet seat/commode. Below are some examples of raised toilet seat, grab bars and commode that will assist people getting on and off of the toilet safely. Make sure all are secured safely on the toilet before use.
